Black Women: Kioni Marshall, 12, makes her mark on New York City’s spoken poetry scene

While some other girls are wasting time getting into trouble, this 12-year-old girl is making a lot people happy sharing her poems.  Her name is Kioni "Popcorn" Marshall.   Marshall has been seen about around 50 times and has fans at the Apollo and Nuyorican Poet’s Cafe.   

According to, she has been writing poetry since 5 years old. It's great this preteen is a poet at such a young age, many young boys and girls are not even blessed to be supported by their parents.  However, Kiona's parents, Beau Harris and Kasheba Marshall encourages her to give her spoken word.   

We want to remind you black women to encourage your children to be all they can be.  There are not many parents in the black race whom support their children and this is one of the main reasons why we have a lot of bitter youth today.   Believe us, there are many young people whom get into trouble, simply because their parents do not take time to help them exercise their gift.  If you wonder why there are so many young people today whom are becoming gangsters, prostitutes and selling drugs, it's simply because they did not have parents to take time and encourage them to explore their natural gifts, most of the time.  This is the same as it was many years ago to tell you the truth.
