After watching Gabby Douglas achieve her status as a Gold Meal champion, as strong black women we should all acknowledge and applaud her winning attitude. Where did her winning attitude come from? Gabrielle Douglas grew up watching her mother, Natalie Hawkins struggle to make ends meet as a single parent, after her father, Sgt. Timothy Douglas allegedly abandoned the family. She was inspired by her older sister, Arielle, a gymnast who inspired her to be the great champion she is today. Let us remind you black women of all ages who grew up fatherless, you can still be a champion, whatever you set your mind to do.
Gabrielle Douglas is a gold medalist, simply because she believed in herself, regardless of her father leaving the household when she was just 9 years old. Allegedly, he left the family in debt without paying child support and was absent in her life while serving in Afghanistan, according to the NY Post. Here is what we noticed while watching these following video clips, Gabrielle's mother and sister made a wise decision to support her dream of becoming a gymnast, which is something many of us black women lacked growing up. Many of us did not have a mother or sister to encourage us after growing up feeling neglected by our fathers. However, each and every last one of us should learn to inspire ourselves, regardless of the lack of support growing up we may not have received from our mother, father or even our siblings.
Natalie Hawkins worked extra hours at her bank job to support Gabby's dream. It was not her father who worked hard to make sure she became such a courageous champion, it was her indeed her mother. We heard her say on one of the following videos, her daughter was practicing about 36 hours a week, so it should be the same for us in order to become successful women and achieve our goals in life. We should put in a lot of hours to achieve are goals in life. One day she told her mother and sister, she was quitting, but they both encouraged her to keep going. So, what is the message for all of us black women of all ages, 'keep going no matter what, keep going, regardless of the lack of support we had growing up and keep going, although many of us grew up without a father in the home'
What we really love about Gabby Douglass, is that she ignores the ignorance from a lot of jealous black people who try to talk about her hair, obviously because they envy her accomplishment as a Gold Medal champion. Therefore, many times, we as black women have to ignore the ignorance of envious people who try to pull us down with words, all because they do not try hard enough to achieve their own goals. Gabrielle's hair is more beautiful than any of the other gymnasts in our opinion.
We want to end with a word of encouragement to all of our sisters whom grew up without a father and may not even had the support from our mothers and siblings, 'believe in yourself, regardless of who may not believe in you, because God created you and He will give you strength to succeed.'
